Not all leather is the same — and the differences matter enormously for how a belt performs over time.
Full grain is the outermost layer of the hide, used in its natural state without sanding or buffing. The natural pore structure, grain patterns, and minor surface variations are preserved. This is the strongest, most durable layer of the hide — collagen fibres are most densely interwoven here, making full grain leather resistant to tearing, moisture, and sustained flexing.
What makes full grain distinctive from a consumer perspective is patina development. The leather absorbs oils from the wearer's hands and skin over time, darkening and deepening in character. A full grain belt at five years looks different — and better — than it did on day one. This is the belt that becomes a personal object rather than a replaceable accessory.

Top grain is produced by sanding the outermost surface of the hide to remove natural imperfections and variations, then applying a finish to create a more uniform appearance. Top grain belts are durable and attractive. They don't have the same depth of patina development as full grain, but they hold their appearance well and perform reliably for five to eight years under normal conditions. Corrected grain leather has had its surface heavily processed to remove natural imperfections, then had an artificial grain pattern embossed onto it. Under a full grain or natural top grain belt, you'd see a somewhat random, organic pattern — corrected grain has a perfectly regular, repeating pattern that reveals its artificial origin on close inspection.
Durability is limited compared to full or top grain. The surface coating can crack over time, particularly at flex points near the buckle. Lifespan under normal conditions: two to three years. This is appropriate for lower price points and fashion-driven applications where longevity isn't the priority.
Split leather is produced from the inner layers of the hide left over after the top layers have been removed. It lacks the dense collagen structure of the outer layers, making it significantly less durable. Most genuine leather labels can legally be applied to split leather — which is why "genuine leather" tells you very little about actual quality.
Polyurethane leather is a synthetic material engineered to mimic the appearance of genuine leather. Modern high-density PU has come a long way — the texture, weight, and visual presentation can closely resemble genuine leather, and it has some practical advantages: better moisture resistance, more consistent colour across large production runs, and lower unit cost.
PU doesn't develop patina. It ages differently from genuine leather — typically remaining consistent for two to three years before showing wear at high-stress points. For fashion-forward applications, promotional use, or markets where price sensitivity matters more than longevity, PU is a rational choice. Vegetable tanning uses plant-based tannins — from bark, leaves, or fruit — rather than chromium salts. It's a slower process, more expensive, and produces leather with distinct characteristics: firmer initially, becoming suppler with use, developing the richest patina of any leather type, and containing no heavy metal residues. For brands with sustainability positioning or for buyers sourcing into markets with chemical-sensitivity concerns, vegetable tanned leather is the premium choice.
Understanding how a belt is made clarifies why quality differences exist — and where they come from.
Leather selection and inspection. Every production run begins with incoming material verification. Thickness uniformity, surface quality, dye lot consistency — these are checked before cutting begins. Variable leather quality at this stage creates variable output at the end, regardless of how well the subsequent production steps are executed.
Pattern cutting. The leather is cut to the belt pattern using precision steel dies. Die quality determines dimensional consistency across the production run — a worn or imprecise die produces belts with variable widths and uneven taper. Skiving. The edges of the leather strap are thinned (skived) to allow clean folding or edge finishing without bulk. Inconsistent skiving creates uneven edges — visible as irregular edge finishing even when the paint application itself is correct.
Stitching. For belts with visible or structural stitching, stitch density and thread tension are calibrated per spec. Quality stitching runs at 4–6 stitches per centimetre with consistent tension throughout. Irregular stitching — visible as uneven spacing or variable thread tightness — indicates a quality control gap.
Edge finishing. The cut edges are painted, burnished, or left raw. Multi-layer painted edges require each coat to dry before the next is applied. Rushed single-coat application looks fine initially but cracks within months. Burnished edges — common in vegetable tanned and full grain production — require tool pressure and heat application to compress the leather fibres into a sealed surface.
Hardware attachment. Buckles, rivets, snaps, and rings are attached at dedicated stations. Rivet and snap pull-force is tested during production — hardware that doesn't meet specification is replaced, not adjusted.
Final quality control. Every belt is inspected against the production specification before packing — dimensional check, colour verification, hardware function, surface condition.
This is what a proper production process looks like. When belts are produced below cost pressure, these steps are compressed or skipped — and the result shows up in the product within months of purchase.
Belt sizing is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of belt buying — both for individual consumers and for wholesale buyers specifying production runs.
Belt size refers to the length from the buckle pin to the middle hole — not the total length of the belt. A "size 90" belt measures 90 cm from the buckle attachment point to the middle of the five standard holes.
The total belt length is approximately 15–20 cm longer than the stated size, to allow for the tail of the belt beyond the buckle end.
The correct belt size is typically your trouser waist size plus 2–3 cm. If your trousers are size 32 (approximately 81 cm), a belt size 85–90 will fit correctly, with the buckle pin through the middle hole.
Standard size progression: belts are typically available in increments of 5 cm — 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110 cm. Some manufacturers offer 2 cm increments for more precise fit.

Women's belt sizing is less standardised than men's. Narrow fashion belts (15–25 mm) are often measured differently — sometimes by total length, sometimes by the distance from the buckle to the first hole. Ratchet or automatic belts eliminate the sizing problem through a different mechanism entirely — a hidden track and release system allows micro-adjustment across the full strap length, with no fixed holes. Belt width determines both the aesthetic character and the functional application of a belt.
20–25 mm (0.8–1 inch): Slim fashion belts. Primarily women's and unisex fashion applications. Through thin belt loops or cinching garments at the waist.
30–32 mm (1.2 inches): Dress belt width. The standard for formal men's trousers with dress belt loops. Slim enough for a refined appearance, structured enough to hold trousers properly.
35 mm (1.4 inches): The most versatile width — works with dress trousers, chinos, and jeans. The dominant width in men's casual and smart-casual belt ranges globally.
38–40 mm (1.5 inches): Jeans belt width. The standard for denim applications. Wider than dress belt loops but sits cleanly in jeans loops.
45–50 mm (1.75–2 inches): Wide casual, western, and workwear belts. Statement width — carries decorative hardware, wide bar buckles, or western-style tooling well.
Sustainability credentials in leather goods are increasingly meaningful to buyers and consumers — but the terminology is often unclear.
REACH compliance: The EU's chemical regulation restricts specific substances in consumer products. For leather belts, this primarily covers nickel in hardware (contact dermatitis risk), hexavalent chromium in leather (carcinogenic), and restricted azo dyes. REACH compliance is a legal requirement for EU market sales, not a premium sustainability credential. Every belt we produce is REACH compliant as standard.
Chrome-free tanning: Conventional leather tanning uses chromium salts, which are efficient but produce wastewater containing chromium III (generally manageable) with risk of chromium VI formation. Chrome-free tanning uses alternative tanning agents — glutaraldehyde, synthetic tannins, or vegetable tannins. LWG certification: The Leather Working Group is the primary sustainability certification for tanneries. LWG-certified tanneries have demonstrated responsible environmental management. Vegan and PU leather: PU leather carries no animal welfare concerns. However, polyurethane is petroleum-derived, which creates a different category of environmental consideration.
